The animals that live along a riverbank prepare for a long, cold winter in this gently told, beautifully animated short film by Swiss animator Marjolaine Perreten. Perreten also created Super Grand [Super Big]. As the rain falls and the sky grows grey, each animal is shown to have its own particular battle as the seasons change from autumn to winter. Although the representation is not realistic — the hedgehog and the snails ride a little boat together — the depiction of a particular European season is very realistic. The film creates the opportunity to contemplate hibernation and habitats, to consider the importance of food and shelter in the role of winter in everyday life. Themes such as migration and sustainable development/climate change are implicit in the narrative. The peaceful atmosphere of the film positions it as an example of affirmative representation of positive European values.
